ℹ️ These come from the very first workshops Protein Community conducted to understand what our Community think bad growth is.

Bad Growth is:
A destination • Homogenous • For the few not the many • Exploitive • Short term / sighted • Speed / exponential • Ignorance / lack of empathy • Reductive or complicated
Examples of bad growth are:
- Facebook’s rapid growth, combined with features such as the like button and endless scroll, led to an addictive and damaging platform. Caring about people, planet above profit may have led to changes.
- Hype cycles caused by meaningless NFT drops and culture of FOMO
- pump and dump "communities" (all shilling?) @gustavo
- Any company that creates additional demand for their products via mass marketing
- Any company that puts shareholder interests first
- VC driven turbocharging of loss makinng companies that parasite and then destroy sectors (Uber/ public transport/ restaurants with their dark kitchens)... AirBnB that make swathes of cities unaffordable. VC money supporting unsustainable businesses and subsidising to undercut the organic ecosystem of businesses
- a whole industry of tech companies that celebrate being in massive debt from day one
- greenwashing to increase growth
- product development that leaves recycling / breakdown to the consumer & government
- extractive expansion that doesn't feed back into local or resource source
- international festival chains, commercializing culture but "wrapping it as local" - cringe
- saying you're serving a community when you're only extracting insight from them and giving them scraps. eg paid for 1 off activities instead of financing or facilitating their dreams
